Process Overview
In May 2015, President Tim Sands challenged the Virginia Tech community to engage in Beyond Boundaries, and began an important conversation about the university’s future without constraints of today’s perspectives and perceived barriers. More than 90 committee members undertook significant effort, research, and constituent meetings during the 2015-2016 academic year resulting in the Beyond Boundaries: A 2047 Vision offering a framework for the future.
The visioning work of the university continued in the 2016-2017 academic year with the focus of expanding the concepts formulated in year-one and moving those concepts towards implementation.
In the past two years, foundational projects from across the university were initiated to propel the Beyond Boundaries vision.
01
PHASE
The Beyond Boundaries vision established in Phase 1 will be used in Phase 2 to identify university-level milestones and metrics that will chart our progress and inform our decisions and priorities. Those milestones and metrics will be informed by the current aspirations and initiatives already underway in colleges and units.
While our long-term vision for the future will guide the university, the trajectory toward that vision must adapt continuously to the sweeping societal, technological, and economic changes that are enveloping the university.
As we move into planning, it is time to re-examine the “why” behind each of our goals and initiatives. What is driving a particular long-term goal? What are the principles behind the initiatives that have already been launched? The following outline defines several of our major goals and initiatives and strives to answer the question, why? – why are these goals and initiatives critical to Virginia Tech’s success in the future?
The visioning process is complete. Now the university will use the Beyond Boundaries foundation to develop a continually evolving strategic plan to guide and measure our direction forward.
